| 09-12-01 I'm tired. Physically and psychologically. This disaster has been a huge strain. The sadness of so much death. And the resulting bloodthirsty rage of this country is frightening. The rise of jingoistic patriotism. These events will probably increase militarism and support for the armed forces. The budget spent on the military will be increased even more at the expense of Social Security and other social services. Progressives are going to be set-back politically. I'm at my most pessimistic right now…it almost makes me cry. I wonder if there is any hope for the world. It will take a huge environmental catastrophe that will wipe out most of humanity before there will be any change in our behavior. I fear for the future. There was a great line on South Park tonight. I've seen every episode, and I have them all on tape, too. I find them often brilliant. The line was "Boys, you've got to understand that sometimes what's right isn't as important as what's profitable." Peace to all. |
