| 8/22/01 Hard thunder & lighting outside tonight as I write this. Recall, if you will, the worst thunderstorm you have ever experienced. Then multiply that by 100. Welcome to the future we are giving our children. Although the human species is destroying the planet's ecosystem, eventually the Earth will have its revenge. The good and the evil intermingle every day, but evil seems to dominate. Jessie Helms to retire. Strom Thurmond…still not dead. Of course, Jessie will probably be replaced by another racist, just one who doesn't talk about it as openly. But one can always hope. I don't watch Good Morning America or any other insipid morning shows [Is it just me or are these talk show hosts golems, pale replicas of real human beings? Is Katie Couric's hairstyle the essential subtext of each broadcast?], however, I do catch bits of these shows at the gym when I work out in the morning. And this morning, there was a 15-minute segment all about Powerball. The lottery. And I was worried that the news media doesn't have it's priorities straight. I went to a big Green Party rally last week. It was quite exciting, actually. It was a kick-off fundraiser for Campus Greens. The place was packed, sold out. There was a real fiery energy in the crowd. Ralph Nader spoke and many others. Ani Difranco, Patti Smith performed. I didn't stay for the whole thing, but it was encouraging to be there. There have been those liberals who were really pissed off that Nader ran and "took votes from Gore." As if it wasn't Bush who took the votes from Gore. Gore was such a terrible candidate, he couldn't beat a man who can barely complete a sentence. Nader was also criticized for saying Democrats are exactly like Republicans. He later said that they weren't identical, but both were very close in the way they are bought by corporate power. My view is that Democrats are like Republicans, only slower. Meaning, they will still kill us all, but it'll take a little longer to get there. I voted Nader, yes. If anything will get the progressives fired up and active, it will be Bush. I wanted to vote for good, not for lesser evil. Not much happened while Clinton was President, and the world still continued becoming more and more fucked up. The news media continued being owned by corporations and global warming didn't slow down. That's enough for me. Today, I emailed Amnesty International in Amsterdam. I wanted to know if they ever hire staff. I doubt it, but I figured it was worth a shot. |
